Known Scams
Overpayment Cheque Scam
You may have received a request from a potential buyer to pay via cheque for your vehicle, without first coming to see it. These emails often contain spelling mistakes, poor grammar and often ask about paying via cheque.
If you respond and give away your address, they will most likely send you a cheque for more then the amount agreed. The justification of this over-payment could be to pay the agent who is handling the sale or to cover shipping costs.
The scammer would then ask for the over-payment to be paid back to them, usually via an electronic bank transfer. This is how the scammer makes their money, knowing their cheque will eventually bounce. It has been reported that cheques often clear, only to be later dishonoured honoured by the bank.
So you would be out of pocket, by potentially thousands, furthermore, your vehicle remains unsold and you may have rejected legitimate offers in the mean time.
